Was there a compensation package for owners and dealers after the hand gun ban instigated by the Dunblane tragedy?

Yes. Whether it was fair or not I am not sure. I am sure somebody who was involved at the time will be along soon to give more details.
I take it that you are thinking about any possible airgun ban. If there are any restrictions I don't think it will be a ban. The government will have learned after the handgun ban (which cost a fortune) and the brocock fiasco. If anything does happen I think it will be some type of licensing system. e.g. you will have until a certain date to get a license if you want to keep an air gun. After that date, if you choose not to get a license, you will have to hand it in. It would be your choice, so no compensation would be paid. A bit like, but not the same as, the Brocock set up.
Any new shooters thinking of taking up the sport would have the hassle of applying for a license so may be put off and the sport will suffer.

I can rember my uncle telling me the guys with pistols got about £100 for £1000 plus guns. we should kick up a fuss about how much this will cost the tax payer aswell as bringing in the rest of this legislation

For 168,000 handguns surrendered it cost the government 94 million pounds to compensate.
I heard the opposite, they compensated for not only handguns but all brass, powders and bullets including equipment to homeload.
i know one guy who was given £700 for a £100 pistol, and later saw it in a European magazine. it was a one off. So you decide what happened to all the 'destroyed' guns!
