If there were 444 recorded air weapon offences in Scotland in 2008-09, and 700,000 airguns, then that means that about 0.00063% of airguns were involved in such offences. In fact, this figure may even be lower, as the chances are that one airgun accounted for more than one offence. If only so few cars were involved in accidents! Seems highly unfare to punish the majority for the activities of the (absolute) minority!!!

THE GUN TRADE ASSOCIATION
LICENSING OF KNIFE DEALERS
Response to a Consultation
Proposed Exemption for Registered Firearms Dealers
1. The Gun Trade Association represents some fifty-two businesses in Scotland
which are registered with their local chief officer of police as firearms dealers
and are subject to rigorous inspection and scrutiny by the police. The primary
business of these dealers is selling firearms, ammunition and accessories to
professional stalkers and gamekeepers as well as to participants in shooting
sports. Sales of knives are an important part of this business.
2. The application of the requirement for a Knife Dealer’s Licence to Registered
Firearms Dealers (RFDs) would involve a considerable duplication of the effort
of the licensing authorities and of the RFD but would add nothing to the level
of control that currently exists.
3. There are some 78,000 firearm or shotgun certificate holders and about
700,000 airgun owners in Scotland. A 2006 report by Public and Corporate
Economic Consultants established that some 200,000 certificate holders from
the rest of the UK visit Scotland each year to take advantage of field shooting
sports (deer stalking and game-bird shooting). In addition, over 7,000 visitors’
firearm and shotgun permits are issued each year to allow visitors from other
countries to participate in sporting shooting. A 2004 report for “Visit Scotland”
estimated that visitors provide about £80 million direct income to Scottish
sporting shooting providers as well as a very much larger sum in subsidiary
expenses.
