For What Its Worth - When I was a "Kid" my friends and I could go for a days shooting without damaging other peoples property, shooting at pets or people, BUT neither were we "off out faces " on drink or anything else for that matter. The guns are not the problem its the idiots and society we live in. The "neds" will not care about legislation if anything having banned guns will help street cred.

you have identified the major problem, the criminal element don't care about the law. look at handguns, they banned handguns and handgun crime went up some 40%. the only people that were affected by the ban were the law abiding, license holders. the people that went to the police to apply for a license. the people who opened their homes to inspection, the people who were checked out by the authorities and deemed responsible citizens. then and only then would you be given a license which could be revoked at any time.

however, the criminals don't give a toss about the law and acquire ileagally imported, stolen, converted weaponry which come into our country through poorly patrolled borders. check out the SARPA websight and the Home Affairs Committee. right at the start they state that the majority of firearm crime is committed with illegally possessed weapons. try this link to the video.
