Im running firewall through the router, then eset's nod32 smart security and Spy Sweeper as my final defence on the pc.
You can have all that but as you say, if you allow a download to happen especially if its p2p stuff then basically your allowing these things to get into yer computer if infected.
Also ditto about links to accounts whether its paypal, ebay, bank accounts or anything........NEVER EVER CLICK ON AN EMAIL LINK OR SUCHLIKE always go direct as you say to the website. These places never ask for passwords or any details about yourself through email.

If ever you wanted a good reason to run a Mac ......
I hope that you get it all resolved without any loss and without too much hassle to yourself.
Timely reminder to ensure that your security suite is kept up to date, update it every time that you boot the system, or every day if you run your OS continually.
Never download S/W from an unknown or unverified source, or if you must do so, do it on a separate testbed which IS NOT connected to your main machine for verification before install.
Cheers

On Windows I currently use Avast antivirus, Spybot antispyware and Zonealarm firewall. I run full scans with both at least once a month. I'm careful about doing regular Windows updates too. I use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer - it's more secure. I'm careful to choose difficult-to guess/crack passwords too. The wireless interface on my router is turned off unless needed. I also make regular backups onto USB sticks and an external HDD.
I mostly use Ubuntu Linux now, it's so much more secure than Windoze XP.

I take it you're not using AVG and McAfee at the same time on one PC? If so, they'll cause problems for each other. You'll need to uninstall both, then reinstall only one. AVG is free, and IMO better than McAfee.
